PostSubject: Palpitations   Tue Nov 03, 2009 2:31 pm

Does anyone suffer with palpitations? I've been having them for a couple of years and now they've decided to wire me up to a 24 heart monitor thingy. Thankfully the bloody thing doesn't bleep! But I suspect I'm allergic to the sticky pads they've put on me cos they're getting itchy!

That doesn't sound very nice. Still, I suppose it's bearable for one day...

I did once, about 15 years ago - I was drinking vast amounts of really strong black coffee and after a few months was getting weird feelings in my chest (hard to explain but like it was missing a beat). I had various tests done etc., and my heart was monitored etc. I have a heart murmur so I found, which subsequently I found out that is genetic - my grandfather, mother and niece all have one too, but the specialist said it is nothing to worry about - there has been no history of heart attacks or disease in either side of my family.

Anyway I stopped drinking caffeine totally for about 3 months and the palpitations disappeared. Started drinking the occasional cup of coffee and for past 12 years or so have been drinking 2 or 3 cups a day (still strong, still black) with no reoccurrence.

I think Justice is right, Cat. Palpitations are endured by loads of people with no lasting effects. Coffee will do it, but the worst type to drink is the stuff that has been stewing in a warmer in an office for 2 days.

I get palpitations (when I wank after 24 cups of coffee, 2 bottles of wine, and a gram of coke) but have learnt to ignore them, once I have learnt the lesson of what caused them.

Seriously, the one thing I have discovered to be true is that if you are having a serious heart problem, then you will sure as hell know about it, and not mistake it for anything else. Anxiety will cause palpitations too - even worrying about your heart, Dear Heart.

Especially in Tom's office - that funny creamer he adds to it when no-one's around doesn't taste quite right!

I stopped drinking real coffee and switched to decaf several years ago - I do have a cup or two a day several times a week now.

I think it's stress because when I started having them I was also having panic attacks. Luckily they stopped but the palpitations have now returned.

Don't worry Cat. The palpitations will no doubt be a milder form of the panic attacks, but just like it's ebbing away. I've had both types of thing, and it all goes away of its own accord. I'm sounding like some sort of doctor now, but I'm obviously not. If you are worried or unhappy, it will produce those sort of symptoms, and you just wait for things to change, with a bit of help from your friends. I promise you that.

P.S. Bereavement did it for me. Bereavement also takes different forms - sometimes it's just emotional separation.

I'm expereincing palpitations and panic attacks at the moment, due to lots of reasons, bereavement last year being one of them.

Good on your GP Cat in sending you for tests to rule everything out. My friend use to have panic attacks etc and her GP had her heart etc monitiored regularly to try and alleviate some of her anxiety. It worked albeit as a temporary measure.

Hope it all goes well for you m'dear!

Thanks for the good wishes everyone.

However the palpitations have paled into insignificance in the last couple of days. I've been having "women's problems" (to put it delicately) for a while now but yesterday my Dr sent me back to hospital (yes the same one I'd been to in the morning for the heart monitor) to be seen by the gynaecology team. It seems I have a pedunculated uterine polyp which is the size of a golf ball Shocked

I won't bore you with the details - Google, as always is your friend - but I've got to have a small op. So if I'm missing for a while you'll know where I am.

Any volunteers for temporary moderator whilst I get sorted?

Sounds nasty Cat, but at least you know what it is and it can be sorted. Do you know when the op is?

No Am I don't. I just have to wait for a phone call or a letter - i'm not sure which actually because the Dr had a very strong accent and I struggled to understand her. Actually maybe there's nothing wrong with me at all and I just misunderstood what she was saying Laughing

Make us all moderators whilst you're incapacitated, Cat - that should help us take our minds of it?

I see you're now Moderator, J. That should be a laugh in the days to come. I'm going to start a 'Jesus was a Gay, Jewish, meat-eater' topic, and see how long it takes you to conform.

"... actually she was from Newcastle!" Is that what all those Pets are doing in your new signature, Cat?

I've just proved myself to be a reliable and trustworthy member of the CSTH community.

I even got a rusty sheriff's badge when I was sworn into orifice.
